Can a project send some of the money it received to its dependencies?
Yes! A portion of received money will be forwarded to any projects listed in the .bread.yml file.
What cut do you take?
Zero. If you appreciate the service, please donate! (Stripe's fees will be deducted from transactions though)
How is money handled?
We use Stripe for all money handling.
Do I have to do anything special for taxes?
You will need to research relevant tax law in your juristdiction, but typically received dontaions for software development are treated as income, and donations you make are not tax deductible.
Can I use this for things other than open source software?
Sure!
I'm an open source maintainer. I just want to forward money to other projects, do I need an account?
No, an account is only required for donating or withdrawing money from your account. Any repo with a .bread.yml file can forward money.
What happens if I donate to projects that don't have a .bread.yml file?
Any not-yet-configured projects, invalid accounts, etc. will be skipped from donations until they're set up.
What happens to money in a project that can't be distributed?
The money will remain in any configured project until at least one valid destination is configured. If the project's configuration is deleted without distributing the money, the money will be considered forefeit after a period (see the Terms of Service for more information).
